About Llandudno
Approaching Llandudno from Colwyn Bay, the road rises around the edge of the Little Orme and, as you go down the slope on the other side, Llandudno is spread out before you. You can see around the sweeping curve of the North Beach, the (hopefully) blue sea, golden sands, the promenade, over two miles long, and in the distance the Pier. Dominating everything though is the Great Orme's Head. This is a large chunk of limestone 679 feet (200m) high right at the end of the peninsula. Apart from the Ormes, the central part of the town is flat making it ideal for those for whom walking is not easy. If the weather is not too good as you approach Llandudno from the coast, or from the hills and mountains, don't despair. Llandudno seems to be in a favoured spot, and quite often the weather there is significantly better than what you meet on your journey.
It is known that the area has been inhabited for around 4,500 years at least, as relics of the Beaker Folk have been found. These people drank from thin walled bell shaped cups, so valued that when they died, their beakers were buried with them. Mining for copper started in the Bronze Age about 4000 years ago and there is plenty of evidence that during the Roman occupation, they extracted copper from the Great Orme. The town is named after St Tudno, a sixth century monk who is said to have brought Christianity to this part of Wales. The prefix 'Llan' generally indicates a parish. A church named after him stands on the site of his original church, although most of it was built in the fifteenth century. |
