About Scarborough
Scarborough, the most popular destination in North Yorkshire, is a good sized and varied town which is also a holiday resort. There is the modern traffic free shopping centre; the ruined castle high on the cliff top; the old part of town with narrow streets winding steeply down to the working docks; the sea on north and south facing shores, attractive parks and gardens; funfairs, entertainment and nightlife. Top rate sporting and cultural venues are here too. In addition it is a good base for exploring the North York Moors National Park and the sea bird breeding grounds of the Heritage Coast. All of these features also make the town attractive as a place to hold conferences.
Scarborough has long been settled, and you can see artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages onwards, through to remains from the various invaders - Romans, Saxons, Normans and Vikings. It was a Viking chief called Scardi (though not to his face) from which nickname Scarborough is said to derive (the word means 'harelip'). The 12th century castle overlooking the town is somewhat damaged having been besieged through the ages by both overseas attackers, and by natives in the Civil War in 1649. Finishing touches were supplied by the German fleet in 1914. Now visitors are welcome - it's open daily through the year. Scarborough is the first resort. A mineral spring was discovered in 1625 and the local doctors, possibly having previously studied marketing, pronounced the spring water as a cure for all known ills and began letting their properties out to patients. The Victorians started the trend for sea bathing early in the nineteenth century, and when the railway came in 1845, the town grew rapidly. The development of the buildings and parks was begun then and their legacy gives the town a lot of its charm. |
