About Lytham St Annes
The first question people ask is about the name of this area. It comprises three parishes. Starting from the north they are St Annes, St Annes-on-Sea, and Lytham. The oldest, Lytham has been around for over 900 years, originally a village whose inhabitants farmed and fished until the late 18th century when sea bathing became popular.
As with other towns, its popularity increased when the railways arrived in 1846. However it avoided the brashness of nearby Blackpool and remained somewhat exclusive. It's symbol is the windmill, now used as an information centre, which has been standing since 1820. Today Lytham retains a lot of old world charm and individuality with fewer of the chain stores that make so many of our towns look the same. 'Lytham is England as we would like it to be.' St Annes on the other hand remained an area of sand and farmland until the 1870's when a group of businessmen from the Rossendale area of Lancashire, leased the land from the Clifton Estate and started building the new town. It became popular with the middle classes and in 1885 the pier was built with further hotel development and the town's four golf courses (including Royal Lytham and St. Annes). By 1927, the town had spread so far towards Lytham that the towns were merged. |
