About Bridlington
Originally a fishing village, Brid started attracting visitors in the late eighteenth century when the spa was discovered. Accommodation was built and doctors would recommend to their sicklier patients that they go to Bridlington to 'take the waters'. The craze for sea bathing later on further increased the number of visitors to the town. In 1846 when the railway from Hull was completed, the pattern was set. But still fishing and marine trading were important and the harbour was improved until by the middle of the century it had taken on its present form.
Bridlington Bay was often used for shelter from the worst of the storms in the North Sea, but in the winter of 1871, over 70 men were drowned and 30 ships lost following a tremendous and sudden storm. Much of the loss would not have occurred had not the ships been overloaded. As a result, Samuel Plimsoll MP succeeded in getting a law passed, though not until 1876, requiring ships to have loading levels painted on their hulls. The Plimsoll Line shows the maximum loading levels for ships, allowing different levels according to the time of year and whether the ship was going to the tropics, in fresh water or sea water. Bridlington, and other resorts in Britain, thrived from Victorian times until the 1960s when the British started taking overseas holidays. Since then a lot of hotels and guest houses have closed and the '70s and '80s were pretty desperate times. The situation has been improving over recent years and those that are left are in a better position, and better equipped than ever before. En suite bedrooms, with central heating, colour tv and tea makers would have been unheard of 25 years ago. Now these facilities are quite usual as hoteliers attract visitors all year round for seasonal breaks with more comfortable accommodation. |
