About Bournemouth
Central Bournemouth. All you would expect from a major town centre here, yet only half a mile from the sea and pier. Apart form the main indoor centre, there are a varied lot of shops and cafes stretching through the winding streets of the older part of town. The Bournemouth International Centre and the Pavilion are in the central area.
East Cliff. On the East Cliff itself are a series of large hotels set some way back from the road, East Overcliff Drive. Beyond this, lie a series of gentle roads lined with pine trees which provide wonderful relief from the hot sun and which give privacy to the hotels spaciously arranged either side of the road. Some are large Victorian villas now turned into hotels, others were purpose-built at a later stage. The nearest shops, which are on the very edge of the main part of the town, are half a mile inland and do not intrude into the relaxing ambiance. West Cliff. The features of this area spreading out to Westbourne on the boundary with Poole, are the Chines. These are long gradual natural channels through the cliff down which you can walk to the sea and beaches. They were planted with pines by Tregonwell early in the last century, and provide a shady refuge when the sun gets too hot. Durley Chine is the nearest to the town, with Alum Chine further along in Westbourne. The bridge on the side photo crosses Alum Chine with the floor some 50 feet (16m) below sloping down towards the beach. There is a fine selection of local shops, pubs and eating places in Westbourne and a Victorian arcade and it manages to keep its village atmosphere very well. A good place for browsing and finding the unexpected. |
